First Golf Lesson at 44 – A Fresh Start at Brookwater Golf & Country Club

Tomorrow marks a bit of a milestone — I’m heading off for my first ever golf lesson at the ripe young age of 44.

Back in my twenties, golf was more of a social sport — beers with the boys, a few wild swings, plenty of laughs. It wasn’t about technique or scorecards back then, just a good excuse to be outdoors and swing a stick. Fast forward a couple of decades, and now I’m ready to take it a bit more seriously. Time to build some habits and actually work towards a solid game.

I’m booked in at Brookwater Golf & Country Club out at Springfield — hands down one of Australia’s finest courses. That alone is a bit intimidating. Add to that I’ll be meeting Dwyane, the pro there, for my first proper golf lesson... and yeah, the nerves are real.

Honestly, I don’t know exactly what to expect. Am I doing the right thing? Should I have played a few more rounds before jumping into a lesson? Or maybe I’m getting in at just the right time — before the bad habits really sink in and become muscle memory.

What I do know is this: I want to walk away from tomorrow with a clear direction. My main goal? Consistency. If I can learn how to swing with rhythm and keep the ball somewhere near the fairway, I’ll be stoked. I’m not chasing a scratch handicap — just a game I can rely on and improve over time.

So here’s to tomorrow — to hitting reset, asking questions, and being a student of the game. And who knows, maybe the 44-year-old me will end up giving the 24-year-old me a run for his money… minus the beers mid-round (well, maybe just one).
